Humanitarian Aid: Crisis Shelters for Humanitarian Missions

Humanitarian aid refers to the support provided to people who find themselves in emergency situations, for example, because of war, natural disasters, diseases or other life-threatening emergencies. Following the principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality and independence, this type of aid is aimed at saving lives, alleviating suffering, protecting rights and preserving human dignity.

When people are displaced from their homes due to natural disasters, conflicts or other crises, they urgently need protection and safety. Shelters are an essential part of humanitarian aid, providing protection and a place to sleep to those affected. Structures for humanitarian purposes must fulfil a diverse set of demands: be highly durable, lightweight, quick to set up and dismantle, reusable and cost-effective. For this reason, HTS TENTIQ developed a range of tents and temporary buildings specifically designed to meet the special requirements of humanitarian aid missions.

Areas of Humanitarian Aid: Helping People in Need?

Humanitarian aid encompasses many areas where fast emergency care is essential. In addition to short-term support measures and disaster relief, humanitarian aid also helps to set up long-term and sustainable development opportunities for the people affected.

Humanitarian aid includes:

Food and nutrition

In many regions, there is very limited access to nutritious, safe and affordable food. This can be a life-threatening situation for many people, as it may cause acute malnutrition. Through humanitarian aid, food, nutritional supplements and therapeutic nutrition are provided to the people affected by hunger, malnutrition or undernourishment.

Therapeutic nutrition refers to special forms of nutrition developed especially to treat or prevent nutrition-related diseases. It ensures that affected people receive sufficient amounts of nutrients to improve their health and minimise long-term consequences of malnutrition.

Water and hygiene

In many regions of the world, people do not have daily access to clean water. Through humanitarian aid, clean drinking water, sanitary facilities and hygiene products are provided to the people affected by water shortages, contamination or diseases. The long-term objective is to protect the health and well-being of those affected.

Emergency shelters

People affected by displacement need fast and safe emergency accommodation. This may be due to having to flee, diseases, homelessness or natural disasters. For this purpose, Humanitarian shelters designed for use as accommodation tents, sanitary tents or storage units can be set up as entire refugee camps in a short amount of time. Additionally, the people affected can receive blankets, beds or mattresses and hygiene products.

Health and safety

Humanitarian aid includes providing space to implement protective measures for people affected by injuries, diseases, violence or violations of human rights. This includes the supply of medicine, vaccinations, psychosocial support and other necessary protective measures.

Long-term development

In addition to reactive support, humanitarian aid also focuses on expanding sustainable development. This includes assisting people affected by long-lasting or recurring humanitarian crises by restoring or improving basic living conditions, education or income. The aim is to help those affected break out of the cycle of dependency on humanitarian aid and to find ways to utilise their own development opportunities.
